China detains a former Canadian diplomat

Shortly before the detention was confirmed, Meng attended another bail hearing in Vancouver. Her arrest angered the Chinese government.
Last week, Canadian analysts predicted retaliation from China after the arrest of Bangladesh's boat at the request of the US authorities.
Two sources said the arrest was Michael Kovrig, a former Canadian diplomat who currently works in a conflict resolution think tank in China.
The court documents pointed out that the United States accused Meng of making misleading statements to multinational banks about Huawei's control of a business in Iran, resulting in the risk of violating U.S. sanctions and severe punishment. U.S. officials accused Huawei of trying to use the banks to transfer funds out of Iran.
Huawei and its lawyers said the company's operations strictly abide by the relevant laws.
Ralph Goodale, the Minister of public security, said he was "deeply concerned" about the detention of Canadians and that "there are no clear signs at present" that it was related to the arrest of Meng Wanzhou.
But when asked by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation whether Kovrig's detention was a coincidence, Guy Saint-Jacques, a former Canadian ambassador to China, said, "In China, there is no such thing as coincidence... if they want to send you a message, they will send it."
