The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the "first phase" agreement aimed at ending the destructive trade war may still not be reached, but it is more likely to be reached.
The official said more than a dozen meeting locations had been proposed. The two heads of state originally planned to meet during the Asia Pacific leaders' summit in Chile in mid November, but Chile later cancelled the summit.
One possible location is London, where trump will attend the NATO summit on December 3-4, where the leaders of the two countries may meet. "It's under consideration, but it's not decided yet," the official said
Other meeting places may be in Europe and Asia, but the former is more likely, both in Sweden and Switzerland. Trump's proposed state of Iowa appears to have been excluded, the official said.
The two countries will discuss China's recent push for further tariff reductions, but are not expected to affect the process of reaching an interim agreement.
Given Trump's pressure to face congressional impeachment investigations as he seeks re-election in 2020, the official said China is believed to see a quick agreement as the best opportunity to secure favorable terms.
