China has eight new cases of coronavirus infection in Hubei Province, the first time the center of the epidemic has recorded every day's illness in single digits, as more businesses reopen as local authorities cautiously loosen strict measures of reception.
All new cases were reported Wednesday in Wuhan, Hubei Province, the National Health Commission said Thursday.
In the past seven days, the spread of the disease in the country has slowed significantly as a result of weeks of rigorous measures to control movement and traffic, including a virtual blockade of Wuhan, a city of 11 million people.
Outside Hubei, there are seven new cases in mainland China, six of which are imported from abroad.
Guangdong province accounted for three of the six cases, Gansu Province and Henan Province for two and one respectively.
Overall, 15 new cases confirmed in mainland China on Wednesday were down from 24 a day earlier.
This brings the total number of confirmed cases in mainland China to 80793. As of Tuesday, 62793 people had recovered and left hospital, accounting for nearly 80% of all infections.
By the end of Wednesday, the death toll in mainland China had reached 3169, an increase of 11 from the previous day. Hubei accounted for 10 of the new deaths, including 7 in Wuhan.
In an editorial, the ruling Communist Party newspaper People's daily warned that while the number of new virus cases in China is declining, the situation is still difficult and there is a risk of further outbreaks.
